Written by Eddie Pearson

Welcome to Start The Week. The rumour column with no rumours.

Aye, videos again. We'll get back to making up rumours nearer the transfer window. Meanwhile have a look at the following from 1974. It's called "The Big Clubs" and there's only about four folk left alive that saw it the first time round. We've a feeling you'll like it.

Can't recall seing this when it was first shown, but,if ever a programme highlighted the fundamental difference between the two clubs, this is it.To hear the general manager talk,in such a lighthearted fashion of wife beating, and, how he hoped the traditions would not change, while, our own boss spoke of how he encountered no discrimination at Celtic park, really did drive home what i suppose we already knew, one club driven by intolerance, another, with no such baggage.

And steve beko i think you must be deaf & dumb if you don't hear the evil that comes out of celtic fans mouths. I would like to see you walk into kellys bar wearing a gers top then we would see and hear how evil yous really are.

Cliff Hanley appears to be far too one sided in his views to be considered as an unbiased observer in his evaluation of Glasgow society. Tell me this, Mr Hanley... if Rangers Football Club and their supporters are such evil and twisted anti-catholic bigots, as you insist, then why did they hold a rememberance mass for the Ibrox disaster victims in a Roman Catholic Cathedral??? Chew on that one.

Judging by Hanley's mouth-foaming anti-Rangers rant, I'd suggest that it is him who is the bigot.

Great video ,the year I started officially following the tic going to Parkhead with the brothers, before I could only go up to Ibrox for a lifty or the last 20s as thats where we lived.Waddell's comments throughout are an offence to any sane persons ears,Hope was a visionary I will give him that he put the money from a properly run pools office to good use I still remember the parents and friends having there nights out in the Rangers club as it was the place seemingly ,but all the money he made them they still had to sell the club to a guy who's first choice was Ayr Utd remember and at a knock down price. Also to neutral observer RFC did not hold a requiem mass at the RC cathedral that was actually put on as a a sign of genuine Christian sorrow and rememberance toward the dead by the Catholic heirarchy it was their decision and not all of the establishment "could make it"!Chew on that one and if you chew long enough you may come up with a neutral answer.

To King Billy, Motherwell, what a total tosspot you are, just shows that what is said in the film from 1974 is inbred in you, that in the year 2006 you still think the way you do. I was born and bred in Glasgow, so how does that make me an immigrant. I am Scottish, but have the sense to support Celtic, and yes i'm a Roman Catholic and proud of it. I also had an uncle who was a Grand Master in the Orange Lodge, but i don't hate my cousins who are all Protestants and support Rangers, but what i do hate are people like yourself who have been brought up to hate Roman Catholics. You obviously have been brought up in a hate filled environment and the only way you know how to deal with it is to slander people you don't even know because they are Roman Catholics. Grow up as its people like you that give the people of Scotland a bad name.

Thanks for the response edmoncelt. appreciated greatly, even though my point of relevancy has escaped your notice, (or perhaps you just failed to see it through your veil of bitterness??). but i'll entertain you all the same. so, can i ask you where you sourced this information you are touting as fact from?(- not that i'm disputing your sources, of course, as it is not relevent to my initial point and I am digressing somewhat), ...however, i am only going by what was documented on the above video and I only took my information from the programme makers and analysists alike, and they insist that these alleged ANTI-CATHOLIC BIGOTS associated with RFC attended a CATHOLIC CATHEDRAL to join in with their Christian Catholic counterparts in remembering the victims of the Ibrox disaster.
So, you see, the point is, irrespective of who organised the mass or not, half (if not more?) of the folk that turned out at the RC based sermon were, in fact, the same guys that you and yours have been maligning throughout this discourse.
PS I put the key words in capitals to help spell it out for your feeble intellect. As I said, chew on it.... do not attempt to swallow it whole. Regards, an absolute Neutral Observer.

Dear Neutral Observer your point on some Rangers employees attending a Catholic Mass is rather pointless one. So them attending a Catholic Mass put in rememberance of their club's fans makes them non-bigots? Indeed they would have looked rather silly if they hadn't. Why don't you address the points put forward by Mr Hanley ie- why have Irish Catholics been labeled Fenians and why did Rangers have a non-Catholic signing policy until 1989? And why is Mr Waddell defending these traditions at the end of the documentary? These are simply questions. Maybe you can give me some answers which are logical, concise and informed. I await with baited breath.

Ding Ding,Round Two.I take it that is what you are after
"Mr N O".Well sorry to disapoint you after you have basically blew your own cover but what point did I miss.
"if Rangers Football Club and their supporters are such evil and twisted anti-catholic bigots, as you insist, then why did they hold a rememberance mass for the Ibrox disaster victims in a Roman Catholic Cathedral???
I quote again
"why did they hold a rememberance mass"
Copy and paste is such an invaluable tool and speaking of tools I don't know where you are or what age you are but it would do you good to follow follow the words to a song untainted by religious bigotry (yes they do actually exist) "and if you know the history" is a line that we all know well but sadly it shows that neither you or the royal one on here have much use of and before you go on about history I don't mean listening to old folk at funerals telling you that your sister is really your auntie due to a drunken night your grandad had down at the lodge afer slapping yer grandma about because it was his right.
If you want to insult me don't go playing the feeble intelect card as I will be the first to admit that growing up in Ibrox didn't really expose me to the greatest academics in the world but that is kind of obvious if you put those two words in the same sentence, we were happy with our lot, good Catholic schools only drawback was the non denominational schools being within a brick throws distance.
Not one person on here at a quick glance has mentioned ANTI CATHOLIC BIGOTS apart from yourself or mentioned that Hanley was totally right in his opinions so to say we have been maligning on this is really untrue ,this forum started by saying WW's comments were outrageous and it goes to show that Celtic had a more refined let me say intelligence about in those days not bad for a bunch of "tottie picking immigrants".RFC held itself back by having the Reformist attitude prevalent to Scotland "we are superior no one else counts God is on our side" The world had moved into the 20th century if that club had done the same it could have been a force in Europe for many years all the money it had and prestige all be it built on an intolerant tradition. You ask where I sourced this information
,well go to a library if in Glasgow go to the Mitchell archives is always a good starting point, search the records for the time span and you will find an article about this service and why it was put on to try and unite Catholic and protestant and show a sign of good faith because it wasn't just rangers fans or Protestants who were hurting after that disaster it was a city as they said. That is probably the easiest source that you could find you can even do it online if you like.
I think I have babbled enough pooh on here as of now and believe me I could go on butsadly I must get on with my life.

Clifford Leonard Clark Hanley (October 28, 1922 - 1999) was a journalist, novelist, playwright and broadcaster from Glasgow in Scotland. Originally from Shettleston in the city's East End, he was educated at Eastbank Academy.

He also wrote a number of books, including Dancing in the Street, an account of his early life in Glasgow, The Taste of Too Much, a 'rite of passage' novel about a secondary schoolboy, often seen as semi auto-biographical, and The Scots.

During the 1960s and 1970s he published novels under the pen-name Henry Calvin. They were more successful in the US and Canada than in the UK.

He also wrote the words of Scotland's unofficial national anthem Scotland the Brave, and both wrote and recorded The Glasgow Underground Song - a humorous anecdote on the pre-modernisation era Glasgow Subway.

He wrote the script for 'Between the Lines', which was described by Mary Whitehouse, campaigner, as the filthiest programme she had seen on TV. (Plagiarised from Wikipedia.com)

This "Fenian" was apparently a non-Catholic,like many other Celtic supporters and there is nothing to suggest that Mr Hanley was in fact a supporter of either team. Just a proud Glaswegian.

I`m a german Celtic supporter since more than 10 years now and every single factI heard, paper or book I read, movie or video I`ve seen in the last decade about the Old Firm makes me just happy to belong to the Bhoys. And nothing point it out that clear as the headlines in the scottish papers after the finals in Lisbon, Barcelone and Seville.
I saw the Rangers just onces live a couple of years ago in a CL-qualifier in a little slovenian town called Maribor, even there trouble all around. So not only "Shame in Spain"...I`ve never met football fans like the huns, who were that kind of unrelaxed and unsettled.

It is a shame to see the dark side of the Old Firm in the days where bigotry and hatred were celebrated rather than condemned . To be honest I found it rather disgusting. Willie Waddell's comments were unbelievable and to be honest, not entirely surprising. And the singing about the IRA 12 minutes in to the film shows that ALL of Glasgow, Green and Blue, haven't come far in the past 30 years.

Great film,eh vijoe nat, thank god I live in Canada, and don't see too many Orange Marches,as a matter of fact, the only time I see these dinosaurs of disgust is when I go to the Highland Games in Fergus,Cambridge, or Sarnia Ontario, were they all seem to think that to celebrate their Scottish ancestory they have to be seen in these disgusting Rangers and bright Orange strips with pictures of the present reigning monarch and some old geezer on a white horse crossing a river in a foreign land that doesn't even belong to him and his hunnish hordes.Rangers and their fans for the most part are a disgraceful and disgusting affront to Scottish Football and to all of Scottish society in general,UEFA have found you out, courtesy of your actions in the Madrigal and at the Sesspool known as Ibrox Park, now the majority of clubs in the Scottish Premiere League have embarked on a Masonic,Orange,Presbyterian, conspiracy with the aid of the police, the P.Fs.office, all to cover up the shame of the once mighty blues,Big clubs indeed, there is only one big club in Scotland AND THEY DON'T PLAY FOOTBALL,but they are in most towns and villages throughout Scotland and indeed Britain in general,it looks as though the great Willie got his wish after all because nothing has in bonnie bag pipe land, bon voyage land of my forebears.

Gee us peace. Your concept of being Scottish no doubt involves caber tossing, bag pipes, ginger cheeck hair, tartan skirts, a wee drum and highlander crisps.
The reality is that none of that exists and that Scotland is a small country with the exact same problems within society that EVERY country has. Get of your high horse and maybe try spending some time here in the modern day before spewing out that pretentious pish.

Interesting stuff despite, in my opinion the bias towards septic. Great to see the old stadiums (God how horrid was porkheid even so short time ago as 1974) and the memories of guys pissing down legs and the morons (from both sides) thinking the could throw a bottle 400 yards and only skelping their own.
Sanitised now but is it for the better... who knows

Regarding this sectarian issue (as I believe this docu was about), I was born in 1960 and grew up as a wee boy who idolised Wee Jinky, I have very little knowledge of any of the Lisbon Lions religions, it was only in the last few years that someone mentioned Big Tommy was a Protestant, and I'm at the mo reading Berties book, "A Bhoy called Bertie" and discovered that he's from a mixed marraige. I didn't know because I don't want to know and quite frankly consider it none of my business.

Looking at todays squad, exept for one or two obvious exeptions, I'm in blissful ignorance as to most of the squads religious persuasions.
My hero now that I'm 'all growed up' would be Henke Larsson, and after 7 years at Celtic and following his career since, wishing him every success, I have no inclination whatsoever what religion, if any, he follows, and have no interest in finding out.
I don't think I'm in anyway unique within the Celtic family, but considering the huns are a team I could never have played for because of my religion, I think I would be perfectly unique at the hunnery!
